Increased Childcare Supports for Galway Families Welcome – Naughton

Today’s Budget will make childcare costs more affordable for Galway parents, and improve the quality of services

being provided to support families with young children.

The main measures include:

  • An extra €127 million for the Department of Children and Youth Affairs
  • Early Learning and Childcare supports to increase by €90 million to €570 million annually
  • Base income threshold for affordable childcare scheme to increase from €22,700 to €26,000
  • The maximum income threshold will rise from €47,500 to €60,000, and the multiple child deduction will increase from €3,800 to €4,300Commenting, Deputy Hildegarde Naughton, Galway West – South Mayo said:

“This Budget has taken another significant step towards increasing the affordability and improving the quality of childcare for families, and I am very pleased that funding for the relevant supports has been increased.

“The increase in the base threshold means more parents, and the parents who need it most, will now be able to avail of the maximum range of subsidy. Along with the increase in the maximum threshold, which will see more parents made eligible for the scheme, it demonstrates the Government’s continuing commitment to quality and affordable childcare.

“It is imperative, and Government understands this, to invest in the quality of care and education that we deliver to our youngest children. I know particularly well, having worked in primary education, that high-quality experiences provided at this young age can have a massively positive impact on the lives and future outcomes of our youngest children.

“Since 2016, big steps have been taken to turn one of the most expensive childcare systems in the world into one of the best. Government investment has been increased by 80 percent and there will be more than 200,000 children availing of State-supported schemes.

“However, decades of under-investment by previous governments cannot be turned around in a few budgets. Today’s Budget is a significant step but it is only a step in the right direction, and our work in this regard must continue.

“Fine Gael remains committed to ensuring that we invest in quality and affordable childcare on an annual basis.

“Today’s announcement is a renewal and continuation of that commitment. This investment will mean that, over time, we will have a childcare service which not only meets best international standards but can also deliver, in terms of quality and affordability, for Galway families for generations to come.”
