Naughton welcomes Facebook’s new measures to protect elections in 2019
The Chair of the Oireachtas Communications Committee, Hildegarde Naughton, has welcomed Facebook’s new measures to protect elections in 2019.
The social media giant has pledged to grow its capacity to address misinformation and false news and expand its Political Advertising Transparency Policies.
Deputy Naughton said: “I have been outspoken when Facebook has made errors and I have advocated for regulation but they have to be complimented on this move.
“This is very positive and shows the company are taking their responsibilities seriously.”
Deputy Naughton continued: “The Communications Committee, which I chair, is considering the Social Media Transparency Bill.
“This is an important issue. We should know who is paying for advertising, particularly political advertising.
“Facebook a wonderful tool but has its flaws. I am not afraid to hold them to account but in tandem with warranted criticism, they should be praised for moving to address deficiencies.”
Deputy Naughton concluded: “Additionally, I have been in contact with senior Facebook executives over the weekend in relation to the sharing of those appalling images of last week’s fatal crash.
“I have been assured that they are continually monitoring the site for any reappearance of these images.
“However I am informed there are still people doctoring the original images, making them harder to detect by the dedicated Facebook software.
“It is appalling that this is still happening. I would urge some sense of empathy to prevail and encourage Facebook to continue to monitor and take down these images.”
