Funding increase for Galway Rape Crisis Centre welcome – Naughton

The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs has confirmed to Deputy Hildegarde Naughton that Galway Rape Crisis Centre is to benefit from an extra €40,000 in funding this year.

“Our network of rape crisis centres do hugely valuable work for the community in often difficult circumstances.  The Galway Centre provides professional, caring and confidential counselling and support services for those in our community affected by sexual abuse and sexual violence. I am very pleased that the Minister has supported my request for increased funding,” the local TD said.

“The centre in Galway will this year receive €444,250.00 in State funding, a 10% increase on last year. This will allow them to continue supporting women and children targeted by domestic, sexual and gender based violence,” Deputy Naughton noted.

“I have seen at first hand the invaluable work these centres do and I am encouraged that, nationwide, this year’s allocation will see 10% increase in funding to sexual violence services, 12 new outreach workers for women and children affected by domestic violence to improve access to support and services and a national roll out of a 12 week healing programme for children who have been impacted by domestic abuse,” commented the Galway TD.

“This funding helps offer protection to people fleeing emotional, physical or sexual abuse and will help those in danger. I am satisfied with the increase in funding for this year but we must never be complacent and I will continue to work for improved services for those suffering sexual/emotional or physical abuse.”
