Press Statement by Hildegarde Naughton TD
Fine Gael, Galway West – South Mayo
Over €2.3 million is to be invested in sports organisations and facilities in communities throughout Galway and South Mayo under the Sports Capital Programme, local Fine Gael TD Hildegarde Naughton has announced.
The funding will be shared among a total of over 90 clubs and organisations from across the County and South Mayo, which were successful in their applications under the scheme.
Deputy Naughton, who worked closely with these and other successful organisations in preparing and promoting their applications, welcomed the allocations under what was an extremely competitive process.
“This is an extremely important scheme that seeks to develop sport and recreation facilities in villages, towns and cities throughout the country. It enhances communities both socially and in terms of infrastructure, as well as improving facilities for our current and future sports stars,” said the Galway West TD.
“I am very pleased to have worked closely with a number of excellent clubs and organisations in Galway in relation to their applications and proposals, and I am grateful to Minister of State Brendan Griffin for favourably considering my representations in that regard.”
Among the successful applicants in Galway were;
Claregalway GAA Club €58,350
Corrib Celtic FC €52,808
Cregmore Claregalway Football Club €10,938
Galway Atlantic Athletic Club €5,303
Mervue Public Park All Weather Pitch €24,390
Bohermore All Weather Refurbishment €19,978
Glen Oaks MUGA Refurbishment €13,953
Doughiska Hurling & hand Ball Wall €9,275
Glen Celtic AFC €19,531
Liam Mellows GAA Club €27,570
Maree Oranmore FC CLG €66,342
Merlin Woods Multi-sport €27,873
Oranmore Maree GAA €66,342
Turloughmore Hurling Club €72,966
Neale GAA Club €62,006
Deputy Naughton said that the level of demand and the huge volume of applications for grants under the scheme meant that everyone’s expectations could not be met by the announcement.
“The amount of funding that was applied for was a large multiple of the amount that the Department had available, so it was always going to be the case that there would be clubs and organisations left disappointed on this occasion,” said Deputy Naughton.
“I am pleased that this Government has continued to invest in sports clubs throughout the constituency and people can be assured that Fine Gael are committed to further future funding.”
Ends.
