Educate Together is set to be awarded patronage of a new post-primary school to serve the east side of Galway city and Oranmore, local Fine Gael TD Hildegarde Naughton has revealed.

There has been much speculation about which educational authority would run the new school following the completion of a decision-making process by the New Schools Establishment Group (NSEG).

However, Deputy Naughton, who is a member of the Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills, said that a decision had been made to award patronage to Educate Together.

“I am delighted with the outcome of this process, as I had advocated for Educate Together to made patrons of the new school from the very beginning,” said the Fine Gael TD.

“It will be the first Educate Together post-primary school in the west, and will provide an option for pupils to progress from Galway’s five primary schools that are already under its patronage.

“Most importantly, though, it will provide much-needed additional capacity and facilities on this side of the city for our school-going population, which is projected to grow significantly in the coming years,” added Deputy Naughton.

The precise location of the new post-primary school has yet to be confirmed, though it is known that it will be developed on a site either in Oranmore or on the eastern side of Galway city.

“This latest announcement regarding the patronage of the new school is another step in the right direction,” said the Galway West TD.

“This began with a considerable struggle to satisfy the Department that there was a demographic need for such a school in the area, and securing the patronage for Educate Together was the next stage.

“I am pleased that we’ve been successful in both regards, and efforts will now continue to ensure that an excellent facility is delivered in a suitable location within a suitable timeframe,” she added.

Deputy Naughton said that the new school is scheduled to open in September 2019.
